37 Detainees Die in Niger State Custody, Triggering Outrage and Investigation

The deaths of 37 people held in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State, have sparked widespread concern and calls for a thorough investigation.

The victims were among dozens of people arrested during NSCDC operations targeting suspected illegal mining activities in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of Niger State on September 15 and 16, 2026. Authorities later confirmed that 37 detainees had died inside the detention facility.

The incident quickly became a national talking point, particularly because reports indicated that some of the detainees were young people. Questions have been raised about the conditions inside the facility and what happened between the arrests and the discovery of the bodies.

Cause of Death Under Investigation

The exact cause of the deaths has not yet been conclusively established. Initial accounts from authorities mentioned a possible disease outbreak, while Niger State officials said medical examinations, forensic investigations and autopsies were being conducted to determine what happened.

Reuters reported that survivors described an overcrowded detention cell and alleged that an unidentified substance was sprayed inside. These accounts remain part of the investigation and have not, by themselves, established the official cause of death.

Niger State Governor Umar Bago also said overcrowding and possible exposure to hazardous substances were among the possibilities being examined.

Federal Government Orders Probe

Following the incident, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed that a comprehensive investigation be conducted. The Federal Government subsequently established a 10-member independent investigative committee to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The Ministry of Interior said the committee was constituted to operate independently and establish the root cause of the incident.

Several NSCDC officers connected to the incident were also suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. The government said the investigation would help establish what happened and determine appropriate action based on the findings.

Protests and Calls for Answers

The deaths triggered protests in Minna, with authorities imposing a curfew after clashes surrounding demonstrations. Rights groups, relatives and other stakeholders have called for transparency and accountability as the investigation continues.

For the families of the deceased, the investigation is expected to provide answers about how their relatives died while in government custody. The findings of the independent panel will therefore be closely watched as authorities work to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
